Experimentarium ... aka FUN!

Last year I had the pleasure to meet Knud Schulz from the Aarhus Public Libraries when a group of librarians and architects from Denmark came to visit ImaginOn.

Their library's Transformation Lab is an amazing space and from what I hear is well worth the trip (BTW: I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that I win the lottery) but when Knud emailed this new video of how they're engaging kids in the library development process, I was more inspired than ever.

Book shelves that you can climb on ... jumping rooms that feel like the moon ... Football on the roof, just to name a few. These are just a sampling of the creative ideas that children wanted in libraries in addition to others.

Anyway, take a look at the video and see if you don't agree that a library like this would be lots of fun! For me the takeaways from all these ideas are the themes of " active spaces", "engaging activities", "fun" and "play" - which when you come to think about it, are really the most important esential elements for creating meaningful learning.

I can easily see these being used in a staff training or public workshop event, can't you?

Are you familiar with the Chinese proverb "May you live interesting times"? Well, after watching this interesting 6 minute presentation done by Carl Fisch (blog: The Fischbowl) titled "Did you Know?" I think it's apparent that we're also living in exponential times.

A look at 2015 ???

I hope you've seen the mock documentary from the Media Museum of History before, but if you haven't, it's worth the 12 minute view...

2015 (flash movie)

All I can really say is that given the rapid and development and announcement of many of these new services lately (trusted searching, online storage, social network apps etc) it seems to me that we may be on a much faster path then is depicted in this flash movie. Today's TechCrunch post was the recent: Microsoft Live Drive may launch before GDrive

Watch it -- what are your thoughts? If it does work out this way, then what are the opportunities for libraries and what do we need to be doing do NOW (8.5 years is not that far away)? Just think about it ...
